From the Buckhead View: Partnership to launch Loudermilk Park Legacy Garden
The Southeastern Horticultural Society will unveil details of the Legacy Gardens program at its Garden Show, April 25-27 at The Buckhead Theatre—right across the street from the triangular park, located at the intersection of Peachtree Road, Roswell Road and Sardis Way.
BuckheadView previously announced that the Legacy Garden would be part of the Loudermilk Park redesign—which has begun and is hopefully slated for final completion in July—but details of the partnership had previously not been formally announced.
“The Southeastern Horticultural Society’s experience and expertise will help to further beautify the park, and I believe local garden club members will be pleased with the permanent garden installation,” said Jim Durrett, executive director of the Buckhead CID. “Their legacy gardens are a hallmark of SHS, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them become a partner,” he added.
However, Durrett explained to BuckheadView Wednesday that it is unclear at this time—largely due to the effects weather can have on creating the park landscape—exactly how much of the park redesign will be in place by the April show and whether or not any of the Legacy Garden will be part of the park landscape by show time.
Durrett said, however, that it is hoped that the Legacy Garden will be completed in place in the park by the time of the dedication of the new park design, sometime during this coming summer. The park redesign is a partnership with Livable Buckhead and the city of Atlanta.
Durrett said the CID’s intent is to try to have the park ready for dedication by the time Oliver McMillan opens the first elements of teh Buckhead Atlanta development in July, but he said he could not commit to that at this time. Designed by HGOR, a Buckhead planning and architecture firm, the Charlie Loudermilk Park is designed to complement the Buckhead CID’s Village Streetscape project “to improve and enhance the pedestrian experience by implementing highly-designed, public environments while revitalizing one of Buckhead’s most popular destinations,” Durrett explained.
The Southeastern Horticultural Society’s 2014 Garden Show will set the stage for the 2015 Southeastern Flower Show. The 2014 show is not being called a “flower show” because it will not include a juried competition, Durrett told BuckiheadView.
However, the 2014 Garden Show will include renowned plant speakers and accomplished chefs, floral displays from area garden club members, a competitive photography exhibition, designed gardens, shopping opportunities, tool and equipment demonstrations and children’s activities that will include live goats, laying hens, pot belly pig and more.
“We are excited to partner with the Buckhead CID and Livable Buckhead to be a part of the transformation of the Charlie Loudermilk Park—a key initiative in creating a gathering place in the heart of Buckhead,” said Kate Chura, executive director of the Southeastern Horticultural Society.
“Our hosting of the 2014 Garden Show at the Buckhead Theatre across from the park provides an ideal setting to promote this initiative, and contribute to the Buckhead community,” she added.
The Southeastern Horticultural Society (SHS) has grown out of the annual Southeastern Flower Show, which attracts 20,000 attendees each year. SHS has expanded to include year round educational programs and events.
The mission of SHS is to connect children, teens and adults in Metro Atlanta and throughout the Southeast with nature and educate them about the environment, healthy living and sustainability. SHS partners with locally based organizations to bring the educational component of greening into neighborhoods where people live.
